South Carolina QB Jake Bentley Out Indefinitely With Broken Foot and Ryan Hilinski Will Start
By Michael Luciano
South Carolina quarterback Jake Bentley's 2019 season has already turned into a nightmare after just one week. After throwing for just 147 yards and throwing two interceptions in a loss against North Carolina, Bentley will miss a good chunk of his senior season.
The veteran signal caller will be out for an extended period of time with a broken foot. In his place, freshman quarterback Ryan Hilinski, the younger brother of late Washington State quarterback Tyler Hilinski, will be the starter.
Bentley has always had the arm talent to be a success, as evidenced by his 3,191 yards and 27 touchdowns, but his poor decision making, epitomized by his 14 picks last year and two in the UNC game, has led to his hold on the QB1 job becoming harder to maintain.
Hilinski is straight out of central casting for a quarterback, as his 6-3, 230 pound frame is capable of effortlessly chucking balls deep downfield with precision.
Gamecocks fans have been clamoring for Hilinski ever since camp started, and now Will Muschamp will have to throw the freshman into the fire against Charleston Southern this week, warmup for the real test against Alabama the following week.
