Spurs Are the Perfect Team to Help Boogie Cousins Hit the Reset Button on His Career
By Michael Luciano
Despite shredding his Achilles late in the 2018-18 season, DeMarcus Cousins was able to average 16.3 points and 8.2 rebounds per game in 25.7 minutes on a Golden State Warriors team that made the Finals. He did this while serving as the fourth or fifth scoring option on any given night.
Still, his injury history has left Boogie unemployed as most of the other big free agents have been signed (minus Kawhi). There could be a spot waiting for him in San Antonio, however, as DeMar DeRozan has reached out to him in an attempt to swing him towards the Spurs.
If LaMarcus Aldridge can stay at the 4, this would be a perfect move for Boogie.
Gregg Popovich, a curmudgeonly old man who doesn't get these kids and their new-fangled three point shot, oversaw a San Antonio team that shot the fewest threes--despite oddly having the highest three point percentage--last season.
While Cousins could certainly shoot from deep at a high level for a 6-11 center, he's at his best using his 270 pound frame to bully people down low and hit midrange jumpers. The continued success of Aldridge and other Spurs bigs proves that Popovich still values the center position on offense.
This would give Cousins a system in which he could serve as a No. 1 or No. 2 scoring option without shouldering the load, as DeRozan and Aldridge could from a powerful triad with Boogie in San Antonio.
He may never be the elite center he was in Sacramento, but Cousins could put this rough offseason behind him with a fresh start in San Antonio.
