3 Mid-Round QBs Steelers Should Target in 2020 Draft to Eventually Replace Ben Roethlisberger
By Jerry Trotta
The first thing you think about when you hear the name Mason Rudolph is the infamous brawl he was involved in with Myles Garrett in a game against the Cleveland Browns. That's all you need to know about where he stands as a quarterback in the NFL. After all, not many gunslingers can say they lost their job to a man named Devlin "Duck" Hodges.
Rudolph clearly isn't the Steelers long-term play at QB. With Ben Roethlisberger getting up there in age (38), Pittsburgh should look to address that predicament in this year's draft. Let's highlight three mid-round prospects general manager Stephen Colbert should trust over Rudolph.
3. Jacob Eason
Another college QB with a unique backstory, Eason was benched at Georgia in favor of Jake Fromm in 2017. He went on to sit out a year and play the 2019 season with Washington, with whom he threw for over 3,000 yards and 23 touchdowns. At 6-6, Eason is more physically imposing than Rudolph and his arm is significantly stronger. He's currently projected as second-round pick by Mel Kiper Jr., but he could very well drop considering the heavy lifting on QBs will be taking place in the first round.
2. Jalen Hurts
We all know of Hurts' famous move from Tuscaloosa to Norman, but that narrative is irrelevant now at this stage of his career. There are questions as to whether the 21-year-old's throwing ability will translate to the NFL, but we're talking about a tremendous dual-threat athlete who finished 38-4 as a starter at the collegiate level. No-brainer.
1. Jake Fromm
Fromm caught a few pundits off guard when he declared for the draft. We aren't thrilled about his NFL outlook, but the Steelers are renowned for maturating young QBs. Plus, Fromm will learn under Big Ben, a two-time Super Bowl champion and proven warrior. Across three seasons at Georgia, Fromm finished fourth in school history with 8,224 passing yards. The former Bulldog could thrive under head coach Mike Tomlin.
