When you're vying for an NFL roster spot, sometimes even an incredible play won't change your fate.

Jayrone Elliott learned that the hard way, as despite recording an 88-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown following an impressive strip sack of Panthers' rookie Will Grier, he was shown the exit door during the Steelers' 53-man roster cuts.

At the end of the day, the Steelers weren't going to keep him around unless they felt he could improve the team over one of its preferred 53 guys. Ultimately, that wasn't the case, and they sent him packing.

Still, his defensive highlight won't be for naught, as it certainly put him on the map for one of the other 31 NFL franchises to poach.

Elliott gave a shoutout to Pittsburgh via Instagram following the news, and he'll now seek his next opportunity in the league.

The former Toledo standout went undrafted in the 2014 NFL Draft before latching on with the Green Bay Packers. He appeared in 38 games for the Packers, mostly on special teams.
