Steelers GM Kevin Colbert Blew it by Not Trading JuJu Smith-Schuster After Latest Buzz Emerges
By Thomas Carannante
The Pittsburgh Steelers are a team that builds through the NFL Draft, so what's the point of this?
Wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster is entering the final year of his contract with the team and there have been all sorts of rumors regarding his status for the upcoming 2020 season, as well as his long-term standing in the Steel City.
Well, Steelers insider Ed Bouchette now says it's unlikely the team will re-sign the USC product, and it makes everything even more confusing.
Bouchette dropped his insight during a live Q&A with fans. He also mentioned that James Conner likely won't be back after 2020, either.
So then what's the point of keeping these guys? While Steelers fans are optimistic about the team's chances heading into each and every season, there's little hope for a Super Bowl run in 2020. The Kansas City Chiefs only got better this offseason, and so did the Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns. On what planet does not getting value for Smith-Schuster on the trade market when so many teams are in need of a stud wideout make sense?
Now the cat's out of the bag, and the Steelers will seemingly just play out next season with two of these offensive forces? Sure, they aren't All-Pro talents, but they could be valued contributors elsewhere, making Kevin Colbert's decision to stand pat and not trade them for draft capital even more bewildering.
With all of the tremendous work this team does through the draft, a couple extra mid-rounders (and maybe even a second-rounder!) would've done wonders for the Steelers in what was one of the deepest classes in recent memory.
