Steelers Must Resist the Urge to Overpay for Aging Jason Peters
By Michael Luciano
The Philadelphia Eagles parted ways with left tackle Jason Peters after a decade of excellent service, choosing to move forward with 2019 first-round pick Andre Dillard.
Peters has a somewhat robust market for an offensive lineman approaching 40, as the Pittsburgh Steelers have reportedly kicked the tires on signing him.
If you're listening, Kevin Colbert, hold off on making this move.
Pittsburgh appears to be set at tackle, as Alejandro Villanueva has the left side locked down while Matt Feiler takes care of business on the right side. Signing Peters, which would cost the Steelers a pretty penny, would force them to either move Peters to the right side after 15 years on the left, thereby moving Feiler to guard, or converting Peters into a guard. At 38, maybe now isn't the best time to reinvent Peters' entire playing style?
Pittsburgh really doesn't need a offensive lineman desperately, but if they have their hearts set on adding someone else, a guard like Ronald Leary on a much cheaper deal would be better than adding Peters.
Peters still has plenty of gas left in the tank, but he should pick his next designation based on the fit, and Pittsburgh just is not a good place for him at this stage of his career.
