Steelers Owner Art Rooney Insists Team Does Not Need to Add a Quarterback
By Jack Murphy
After failing to make the playoffs for two consecutive years, Pittsburgh Steelers owner Art Rooney II inevitably faces uncomfortable questions about the need for change. He does not, however, see a need to add a quarterback to the squad.
Rooney is hopeful that Ben Roethlisberger will be fully recovered from elbow surgery that he underwent in November of last year in time to start the 2020 campaign. Even if he isn't, Rooney is satisfied with the depth the Steelers currently have at the position in Mason Rudolph and Devlin Hodges.
After the departure of Antonio Brown and Le'Veon Bell before the start of last season, Rooney is still obligated to figure out a long-term future on offense. But interestingly, it seems that the future retirement of a two-time Super Bowl champion in Roethlisberger does not seem to worry the Steelers owner, either.
Hey, perhaps the Steelers aren't pursuing a quarterback at the moment because they are interested in a certain Clemson Tiger that is expected to declare for the NFL draft in 2021? That won't make too many folks happy in the Steel City, as that would require quite possibly having the league's very worst record in 2020.
But success requires sacrifice, they say.
In all seriousness, It is unlikely that the Steelers won't try to compete for a playoff spot next season. However, Pittsburgh needs to figure out who they want to be on offense, and that starts with the QB position. For now, Rooney and Co. haven't done enough to answer those questions.
