Steelers Reach 1-Year Extension With Head Coach Mike Tomlin
By Karl Rasmussen
Mike Tomlin could find himself sitting on a pretty hot seat this season, but he's getting a bit of a longer leash courtesy of Steelers brass.
The 47-year-old head coach has agreed to a one-year contract extension with Pittsburgh.
The Steelers have prided themselves on stability in the coaching staff, as it's a rare sight to see Pittsburgh bring in a new head coach. Tomlin himself has been with the organization since 2007, and predecessor Bill Cowher spent 15 seasons at the helm. Before that, Chuck Knoll was in charge from 1969 to 1992. That's three coaches in 50 years.
After a tumultuous 2018 campaign, the Steelers are now presenting Tomlin with a chance to turn the franchise around, as well as restoring some much-neeeded esprit de corps.
As owner Art Rooney II said of the extension, "Mike is one of the most successful head coaches in the National Football League, and we are confident in his leadership to continue to lead our team as we pursue our goal of winning another championship."
In his tenure in Pittsburgh, Tomlin has racked up 125 wins to just 66 losses in the regular season. In the playoffs, Tomlin is 8-7 with a Super Bowl victory under his belt, as well as an additional AFC Championship.
2018 was Pittsburgh's worst season on the field since 2013, and the first time they didn't win 10 or more games. The one-year extension will give Tomlin some extra room to breathe, but he still has a lot to prove with this team in 2019.
