Steelers Should Actually Explore Trading Mike Tomlin to the Redskins
By Kevin Aquino
The Redskins have fired Jay Gruden, and with Bill Callahan likely not the long-term coaching solution for the franchise, Washington has to look to make a big move.
Rather than scouring through coaches on the open market, why not make a move for one that's currently employed? With a 1-4 record and Ben Roethlisberger out for the season, things have run their course in Pittsburgh. Instead of holding Mike Tomlin hostage, why not see what he could do with Dwayne Haskins and Co.?
We've seen teams trade for the right to hire coaches in the past, and the moves have more or less paid off -- Jon Gruden went from Oakland to Tampa Bay in exchange for a number of draft picks in 2002 and the Jets traded Bill Belichick to New England for a 2000 first-round draft pick.
Gruden became the youngest NFL head coach to win the Super Bowl at the time when he led the Bucs to the franchise's first and only championship at 39 years old. As for Belichick...he's Bill Belichick.
What's more, there's already some traction behind the Tomlin-to-Washington speculation -- could the youngest coach to win the Super Bowl be the Redskins' key to success?
If the Steelers want to move on from Tomlin, they should at least look to absorb an asset or two in the process. Depending on just how keen Washington is on Tomlin as their guy, they could be willing to part with draft capital just to acquire him.
Considering the history of trading for a coach as well as both franchises being positioned in front of a brick wall, the deal is certainly worth considering.
