3 Steelers Veterans Who Could Be Cut After the NFL Draft
By Brady Williams
The Steelers are in a strange spot. They have a lot of talent on defense, but an aging Ben Roethlisberger and some holes in their roster mean they're going to need to turn over the dirt on their system to keep things fresh. Part of that process will require drafting some young guys. After they do that, we'll probably start to see a few older players get snipped in the remainder of the offseason.
Here are three that could go.
3. Kameron Canaday, LS
Kameron Canaday has been the Steelers' long snapper for three seasons now. In 2019, he had 141 special teams snaps. Sure it's an important position and some guys stand out at that spot, but if you need to make room for new talent, sacrificing a special teamer doesn't sting as hard. His $1.14 million cap hit with a low dead cap number means he's a potential casualty after the draft.
2. Daniel McCullers, DT
Defensive tackle Daniel McCullers had eight tackles in 2019. That's it. And he appeared in all 16 games. While he's been with the Steelers since 2014 and the team re-signed him this offseason, he could certainly be on the way out if another younger option could take his spot at a cheaper price and the team thinks that player can produce better. Plus, the Steelers can save $1.5 million if he's released.
1. Tyson Alualu, DT
Just a number above McCullers, Tyson Alualu is another defensive tackle who might not be with the team at the start of 2020. Alualu is the most productive of the bunch, having started in 12 games across his three years in Pittsburgh. With 41 tackles and a sack in 2019, he was a good fill-in for their injured guys. However, a cap hit of $3.63 million is a bit too rich for a mid-to-low tier player. They're better off saving some money and a roster spot for someone else. There's no doubt either Alualu or McCullers will get the ax before the regular season starts.
