The New York Mets have themselves quite the welcome predicament. Their starting rotation is arguably the deepest in the entire league, lead by Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard, and Marcus Stroman.

It appeared as though Steven Matz's role in the rotation would be up for grabs, considering the team signed Rick Porcello and Michael Wacha this offseason.

Following his spring straining appearance on Sunday, left-handed pitcher Steven Matz downplayed the notion of competing for his spot, revealing he was told he'd be a starter in 2020.

That settles that...for now, anyway.

Matz struggled mightily at the start of last season, where he accumulated a 5-6 record and a 4.89 ERA at the All-Star break. However, he bounced back tremendously afterwards, posting a 3.52 ERA and 6-4 record.

On Sunday, Matz surrendered a solo home run to Harrison Bader of the St. Louis Cardinals on the second pitch of the game.

The Mets have an embarrassment of riches in the starting rotation, as the loser of the Porcello-Wacha competition will likely head to the bullpen. However, they could eventually work their way into a starter's role if someone goes down with an injury.

Either way, don't talk about a positional competition with Matz, because he's not a part of it, in his words.
