String of Packers Cuts Leak Ahead of Saturday Deadline
By Adam Weinrib
With only one cut deadline now formally installed on the NFL calendar, teams now have the unenviable task of slicing a monstrous 90-man roster all the way down to 53 in one fell swoop.
Getting ahead of the task a bit, a wide variety of Green Bay's roster casualties have begun to emerge 24 hours ahead of the formal deadline.
First came CB Jocquez Kalili.
The 23-year-old out of UNLV had very little to offer this preseason, playing sparingly in the Pack's game against KC, registering three combo tackles.
Then, OT Gerhard De Beer announced he'd been let go as well.
The 25-year-old out of Arizona wrapped up last season with several weeks on the Packers' practice squad, but his early exit from camp this time indicates he's unlikely to be prioritized in that capacity this time around.
Perhaps most surprisingly, LB Brady Sheldon was next to go. The active 'backer with a nose for the ball had been quite involved in much of the preseason action.
Then came OL Anthony Coyle, the 22-year-old center out of Fordham.
...followed by WR Malik Taylor, who didn't make much impact until the tail end of the preseason, but becomes the first skill position guy to see his number called on Friday.
Plenty more to come on Saturday, and we'll see if Sheldon's able to hook on elsewhere.
