One Surprise Cut the Steelers Could Still Make This Offseason
By Michael Luciano

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a pivotal 2020 season ahead of them as it pertains to the direction of the franchise, and not everyone from 2019 is going to be along for the ride.
Former NC State star Jaylen Samuels was a trendy pick in the fifth round given his unique versatility, but he has largely failed to impress in the pros, and his roster spot could be in jeopardy.
One score game.

Jaylen Samuels finds pay dirt.

Samuels was an interesting beast in college, as he caught 200 passes and 19 touchdowns while lining up mostly as a tight end or H-back. During his senior year, however, he played wildcat quarterback and ran the ball 78 times, scoring 12 touchdowns. After having questions about the validity of a 5-11 tight end in the NFL, Pittsburgh made him a running back, which has not worked out.
Samuels averaged just 2.7 yards-per-carry last season and 6.5 yards-per-catch, showing little or none of the explosion and speed he had at North Carolina State. Benny Snell figures to be the backup to James Conner next season, with 2020 fourth-round pick Anthony McFarland offering more of a speedy option.
Samuels' role as the pass-catching running back appears to have been taken away from him, and that doesn't bode well when it comes to him making the team.
Jaylen Samuels offering almost nothing to the Steelers. No vision, little power, below average explosiveness, can't pass protect, and honestly, he's dropped too many balls for a supposedly "receiving" back.

Samuels is a man without a position, and he might be a man without a roster spot by the end of the preseason.
