This Bucs Player is a Surprise Breakout Candidate for 2020
By Alexander Wolz
One of the NFL's most talked-about teams approaching this season is certainly the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski moving down south to join star receiver Mike Evans has understandably stolen most of the headlines concerning the team, but there is also something brewing on the defensive end for the Buccaneers that cannot be forgotten.
Keep an eye on one name in particular: Carlton Davis.
Davis' name is likely not one you've heard many times before unless you're an Auburn Tigers fan, but the numbers don't lie. The Bucs cornerback was targeted more than any other in the league last season, but put up some impressive numbers all the same. Pass deflections can be a bit of a questionable stat considering that more targets lead to more deflections, but just 5.5 yards allowd per target and a completion percentage under 50%? Those are undeniably eye catching figures, particulary for a guy who's only played two seasons so far.
What makes these numbers even more impressive is the competition Davis faced throughout the year. As Tampa Bay's top cover man, Davis guarded the very best receivers across the league, capped by divisional foes Michael Thomas and Julio Jones. Despite squaring up against two of the game's best receivers a combined four times, Davis still delivered a remarkable season.
If you don't buy the numbers or matchups, just check out the highlights for yourself.
And the best part yet? Davis is only entering his age 24 season, so expect much more from him in the years to come now that his team is set to be on the big stage.
