Taysom Hill Changing His Tune After Drew Brees Announced Return Makes No Sense
By Scott Rogust
After the conclusion of the New Orleans Saints' season, there was growing uncertainty surrounding Drew Brees. In the midst of waiting on Brees' decision, backup quarterback/all-around player Taysom Hill publicly deemed himself a franchise quarterback and said that if the Saints wouldn't give him the chance, he'd do so elsewhere.
On Tuesday, Brees announced he will be returning to the Saints in 2020, and shortly afterwards, Hill changed his tune and expressed his excitement to play behind the veteran.
“At the end of the day, I look at Drew coming back and maybe I’m not playing quarterback, which is ultimately where I want to have an opportunity to play in the NFL, but there are still going to be opportunities for me to make plays," Hill said on ESPN insider Adam Schefter's podcast. "I can tell you a unique experience for me that most backup quarterbacks don’t get is I’m in the huddle with Drew on game day...That to me is invaluable.”
Talk about flipping the script way too quickly.
Hill, despite only having six career completions as a quarterback, let it be known to the public if Brees had opted to retire, he's the longterm solution for the Saints under center. Now that the record-breaking quarterback is back, Hill is welcome to returning to his backup role. Huh?
The "Swiss Army Knife" is a restricted free agent, but it's expected the team will match any tender offered by an opposing team, especially since Teddy Bridgewater will be well out of their price range.
Perhaps Hill knows the job will be his in 2021. Either way, changing tune so quickly is a strange tactic by Hill.
