Tennessee Needs to Make Jarrett Guarantano Benching for Freshman Brian Maurer Permanent
By Chris Pyo
It's only been a couple drives for Tennessee Vols' freshman quarterback Brian Maurer, but so far he's looking pretty decent against the No. 9 Florida Gators in a historic rivalry matchup.
Decent enough to justify him replacing Jarrett Guarantano in the starting lineup for the rest of Tennessee's season?
Yep. You read that correctly. In one single drive, the freshman quarterback showed up his junior predecessor and led the Vols to their first scoring drive of the game. And keep in mind the play-calling for the frosh has been abysmal. He's known for making plays with his legs too, and Tennessee isn't letting him showcase that.
All in all, though, he's been a bright spot. Quite frankly, the JG experiment hasn't worked out in Tennessee. It's about time for a change to be made.
Props to Maurer for actually showing up to play against the Gators at The Swamp in such a hostile environment. Even if he falters during the rest of the game, he's warranted an opportunity to start future games over Guarantano, the Vols' starter who led Tennessee to possibly their worst college football start in their storied history, with back-to-back losses against Georgia State and BYU.
The Gators lead the Vols 24-3 in the third quarter, although if Maurer can somehow get the Vols back into this game, he'll be a legend back in Knoxville.
