Terry Francona Offers Up Generic Quotes After Indians Were Eliminated From Postseason Contention
By Parker White
The Cleveland Indians came into the 2019 season as the favorites to win the AL Central, as they have a group of talented players who've been battle-tested. Unfortunately, it didn't all come together and with their loss to the Washington Nationals on Friday night, they were eliminated from postseason contention.
As you can imagine, Francona didn't have a lot to say after the game when speaking to the media.
“Whatever you can do (in that situation), I didn’t do it right,” said Francona. “You try to be there for guys, not just through the good times, but when it’s difficult. When I say that we win and lose together, I actually mean it. They’re not just our guys when they play great. When it’s hard, like tonight, it’s us. We’ll hurt together.”
If you're an Indians fan and you expected Francona to be uplifting and encouraging for what next year will bring, you weren't getting it last night.
Maybe that's because Francona knows that they missed their window of opportunity and big change is right around the corner, whether that has to do with Francisco Lindor, Jose Ramirez or Corey Kluber.
This season could've very well been Cleveland's last chance with this group, and sadly, it was wasted. In fairness, the injury bug hit them hard to key players, but the likes of Shane Bieber and Carlos Santana picked up the slack and had big years.
Maybe Francona can get this team right and prepared for next year for one last hurrah, but his postgame comments didn't give you that impression.
