This Texans-49ers Trade for Dee Ford Just Makes Sense
The San Francisco 49ers are looking to make some changes this offseason after a Super Bowl defeat back in February. One player who has come up in trade rumors is Dee Ford.
The pass-rusher arrived in the Bay Area via a trade last offseason and immediately signed a new five-year, $87.5 million deal. Yet, injuries held him to 11 games in the regular season and only 14 total tackles. The 2018 Pro Bowler is locked into a deal and is a prime trade target for teams needing an upgrade on defense.
The Houston Texans are one team in particular who should make a call about acquiring Ford. Bill O'Brien's team has nearly $20 million in cap space and he is looking to make a positive move after shipping DeAndre Hopkins out of town and enraging the fan base. The addition of Brandin Cooks sent another pick away and the team's first selection comes at No. 40 overall, with the next coming at No. 90.
O'Brien should offer up that No. 90 overall pick to get Ford and his long-term contract. The 49ers would have a hard time saying no and a third-round pick is more than fair after how the veteran's 2019 season went.
Some Texans fans may continue to pile on O'Brien if he made this move. However, his draft history hasn't been amazing and sending the No. 90 overall pick in exchange for a proven player like Ford is probably better than him actually using that selection.
