Texans Deserve All the Heat for Stupidity in Trying to Steal Patriots' Nick Caserio
By Mark Powell

We get it, most NFL teams would trade an excess of financial flexibility and their morals to have a run of success like that the New England Patriots have enjoyed over the past decade-plus. But hell, if you're going to try and steal from the Pats, at least do your homework.
The Houston Texans attempted to bring in New England executive Nick Caserio as their next general manager, but that failed miserably after they failed to read up on his contract with the Patriots. You're not going to believe it--there was a non-compete!
Seems Nick Caserio has a clause in his contract that says he can’t interview with other teams. If so, I hope he got millions for that clause.

How might New England get away with this in today's NFL? They're smart! Hell, it's not like they held a gun to Caserio's head to make him sign (we think). For the Texans, this just adds to their public embarrassment, regardless of how much sarcasm McClain might be using in his summary of the situation.
Houston essentially chased out their old GM and stuck with head coach Bill O'Brien due to a lack of postseason success. In the hopes of becoming Patriots south, they blindly reached out to Caserio and the result is all-too-predictable. How often does New England lose a coach or executive they'd rather keep around? The Josh McDaniels fiasco literally happened just last offseason to Houston's division rival.
How are the Texans not getting destroyed? They fired a GM in June after winning a division title because clearly the HC wanted a specific replacement and they whiffed on that person because they did not understand his contract. That is brutal.

As much as it may pain the rest of the NFL, the Patriots are always one step ahead. It's best to just operate under that assumption.
