This Texans-Giants Trade for Evan Engram Would Give Deshaun Watson Another Much-Needed Weapon
By Jerry Trotta
With general manager Dave Gettleman overseeing operations, nothing is off the table in regards to trades for the New York Giants.
The latest NFL buzz suggests that tight end Evan Engram could become the subject of such talks, with the San Francisco 49ers being one of the first reported teams to display an interest in the 25-year-old physical specimen.
If we're talking other potential suitors, the Houston Texans are one of the first teams that comes to mind.
The fit is apparent in that the Texans should be doing anything and everything humanly possible to make Deshaun Watson happy after the franchise foolishly unloaded all-world wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins this offseason.
Engram is still on his rookie contract, which is set to expire after the 2020 season unless his fifth-year option is exercised, so he will come at a reasonable price. Houston doesn't hold a pick until the second round (No. 40 overall) of this week's draft. The way we see it, GM Bill O'Brien could snag the 6-3, 240-pound pass catcher for a fourth-round selection (which is the No. 111 pick they acquired from the Miami Dolphins).
As talented as Engram is, his injury history has been a serious issue during his time with the Giants and the team would be better suited to get value for him while they can and continue to build around Jones.
The Giants are likely looking to assemble as much draft capital as possible to help fix what is a pedestrian roster based on NFL standards. If Gettleman could land a fourth-rounder for a player who's appeared in a combined 19 games the last two seasons, that would be a job well done.
The Texans, meanwhile, would land a much-needed weapon for Watson who, if healthy, can form a menacing rapport with the stud gunslinger.
