The Braves-Padres Craig Kimbrel Trade Netted Atlanta Austin Riley Thanks to Draft Pick Haul
By Parker White
There are plenty of fans in Braves Country who are saddened to see former Atlanta closer Craig Kimbrel sign with the Chicago Cubs, and quite frankly, there are some who are angry that he was dealt to San Diego in the first place.
To keep your sanity, just remember that part of the return in that deal was the 41st overall pick in the 2015 MLB Draft, which ended up being third baseman Austin Riley.
I'd say it worked out really well.
The 22-year-old has only 19 big league games under his belt, but ever since he was called up and asked to play a new position in the outfield, Riley has destroyed the competition and slashed .320/.363/.707 with a whopping 9 home runs and 26 RBI.
I know that Kimbrel is likely a future Hall of Famer and at this point the jury is very much out on Riley (even though he looks like a stud), but at the very least he's an everyday player with light tower power.
Give me the guy who can make an impact on a daily basis than a reliever who comes in 60-70 times a year.
