The Classic Jets Are in a Meaningless Contract Dispute With Top Pick Quinnen Williams
By Daniel Marcillo
The New York Jets' rookies were scheduled to report to training camp last Friday, but Quinnen Williams was not in attendance. Just like Sam Darnold last season, the Jets' first-round draft pick is not reporting due to a contract dispute.
And when you read more into it, you'll be reminded about how incompetent the Jets' organization truly is.
The issue here is not with the size of Williams' contract, but with the deferment of his signing bonus money. The Jets are seemingly looking to dole out his signing bonus in multiple payments instead of handing it to Williams in one shot.
But that's a problem for Williams because he's currently a resident of Alabama. Once he moves to New York or New Jersey, his tax rate is going to be much higher, and the Jets deferring his bonus will cost the D-lineman around $100,000.
Williams and his agent want none of that.
Sam Darnold missed the first three days of training camp last year while his representations was trying to get a deal done. Why do the Jets want to repeat this?
Just give him the money now. You have plenty to spend.
