The Mets Are Doing a Mets Thing by Not Bringing Back Edgardo Alfonzo After He Won a Title This Year
By Sean Facey
The Mets were once again the laughingstock of the league this year after they failed to meet expectations in fantastic fashion. They loaded up the roster and overhauled the front office in the offseason, yet underachieved in ways would make any baseball fan sick to their stomach.
To their credit, they fired incompetent manager Mickey Callaway at the end of the season, momentarily showing some willingness to improve. But this is the Mets we're talking about, and they quickly reminded us that they can't do anything right by firing Short-A Brooklyn Cyclones manager and fan-favorite Edgardo Alfonzo after he won a title with the team this year.
Success? In the New York Mets organization? Blasphemous!
And it's not like they're being transparent about his head-scratching release either. Mum has been the word from general manager Brodie Van Wagenen and the rest of the front office on the reasoning behind Alfonzo's firing.
It's yet another fitting way to cap off a year of disappointment for the Mets. They rewarded one of the few bright spots in their entire organization with a pink slip without a single comment as to why.
We shouldn't have expected much else from them, but that doesn't make it any less jarring. Only the Mets would find a way to show appreciation for an employee's success in such a dismal and depressing way.
