The Mets Are Legit Psychotic for Their Reported Asking Price to Braves for Zack Wheeler
By Parker White
The New York Mets decided not to sell at the trade deadline, thus keeping Noah Syndergaard and Zack Wheeler, who will be a free agent after the season.
You can debate whether that was a smart decision or not, especially holding onto Wheeler, and I can understand not wanting to trade him within the division.
However, if you are going to talk to the Atlanta Braves about Wheeler, who could've used a starter, don't be this crazy with your asking price.
So, for two or three months of an average pitcher with injury concerns, the Mets thought he was worth Kyle Wright or Ian Anderson, both of whom are top-50 prospects?
That had to be the quickest phone call Alex Anthopoulos had during this trade deadline, period.
The former first-round pick has top-of-the-rotation stuff, but he's made over 30 starts one time in his career, and he missed two years after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2015. Outside of last season, Wheeler has been underwhelming, and he's dealing with shoulder problems this year.
He may be a Georgia native, but the Braves aren't that blinded about homegrown players.
