The Mets Might Just Need to Cut Ties With Jeurys Familia After Latest Debacle
By Seth Carlson
The Mets blew a late-game lead once again, sound familia?
After closer Edwin Diaz let one slip away Thursday night in an eventual Mets loss that carried over into Friday due to suspended play, setup man Jeurys Familia blew his assignment Friday night. He allowed Met killer and Cardinals infielder Paul DeJong to hit the go-tying home run and then Dexter Fowler to hit the go-ahead three-run blast that officially crushed the team's hopes.
Familia, who signed a three-year, $30 million contract with the Mets after being traded to Oakland at the deadline last season, has been a disaster in his first season back in Flushing. The sinker ball pitcher's ERA ballooned up to 6.91 after allowed four earned runs on three hits and a walk in just an inning of work.
Why does Mickey Callaway keep using this guy in tight situations?
The Mets will never get rid of a player after investing this type of money in them, but this discussion should start getting realistic, because he's been beyond terrible and it doesn't look like it's going to slow down anytime soon.
These stats should illustrate a clear deficiency in Familia's game: he has a .375 batting average against and 1.183 OPS in save situations. Those are alarming numbers, particularly for a reliever of Familia's caliber. After all, this is the same pitcher who once saved 51 games during an All-Star campaign in 2016
Another good start by a Mets' starting pitcher was once again wasted, and the Mets bullpen looks out of sorts. Familia appears to be a large part of the problem and the team needs to do something about it.
