One day after the New York Jets debacle, the NFL world was shocked by the news of Arizona Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson's suspension.

The NFL announced on Thursday that the Pro Bowl defensive back has been suspended for the first six games of the regular season due to a performance-enhancing drug violation. However, the announcement wasn't supposed to come this early.

Peterson told the media that his suspension was supposed to be announced next week. Instead, the NFL revealed the news on the day of his charity golf event.

Not ideal timing, that's for sure.

Peterson was originally suspended for eight games, but it was dropped down to six games due to the cornerback dropping his appeal. However, a PED violation never results in an eight-game ban.

According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Peterson was also found to have taken a masking agent to hide the performance enhancer, but it didn't work. Hence, it added two additional games to the original suspension.

Peterson issued an apology for the violation at the event and will look to move on. He'll be eligible to return to the field in Week 7, when the Cardinals play the New York Giants.
