The Phillies Losing to the Nationals' Hangover Lineup Proves Gabe Kapler Has to Go
By Scott Rogust

The Philadelphia Phillies had lofty expectations entering the 2019 season. Adding the likes of Bryce Harper, JT Realmuto and Jean Segura will definitely do that.
Instead, the team was eliminated from playoff contention by the rival Washington Nationals, while also allowing them to clinch an NL Wild Card berth. With Washington celebrating with champagne and beer on Tuesday night, the team sent out their hangover lineup on Wednesday night, giving the Phillies an opportunity to grab a win.
But the Phils lost 5-2 after blowing their 2-1 lead. If that showing proved anything, it's that manager Gabe Kapler isn't the right man for the job.

In his debut season as the Phillies skipper in 2018, Kapler finished with an 80-82 record. It was pretty admirable, considering the lack of talent the team possessed.
But 2019 was supposed to be different, considering they added three All-Stars to the roster and looked to be serious contenders in the NL East. Instead, the Atlanta Braves won it for the second consecutive season (with relative ease), while the Phillies sit in fourth place with a 79-79 record.

The writing appeared to be on the wall after the team brought back former manager Charlie Manuel to become the hitting coach, and it had a wildly positive effect.
Kapler just couldn't get the job done when it mattered most, especially when it came to bullpen management.

“I’m going to manage this club as long as I can. Because I think I give us a great chance to win and I think because I care deeply about the success of this franchise”

With hot commodities like Joe Girardi on the open market, the Philadelphia Phillies would be wise to find a manager who can get over the hump and take them to the playoffs.
