The Smartest Pick Packers Made in 2020 NFL Draft

The Green Bay Packers made the shocking decision to use a first-round draft pick on Utah State quarterback Jordan Love. Drafting him didn't make the team better right now and was surprising considering the team needed help elsewhere on offense.
The Packers ignored the help needed specifically at wide receiver and drafted at least one player from every other position aside from kicker and punter. The initial grades were not great but it did appear the Packers made one pick that stands out above the rest in a good way. That was the selection of tight end Josiah Deguara.

Deguara, who stands at 6-foot-2 and 240 pounds, was the only pass-catcher drafted by Green Bay and could easily be the top tight end on the roster as a rookie. His best competition is veteran Marcedes Lewis now that Jimmy Graham is in Chicago.
The former Bearcat had a solid career at Cincinnati and finished the 2019 season with 504 yards and seven touchdowns. This production came on only 39 receptions and was good enough to earn him an invite to the Senior Bowl and NFL Combine. For comparison, Travis Kelce is another former Bearcat tight end whose best season featured 722 yards and eight touchdowns, and he still did not have sustained success over his entire college career like Deguara.

• Josiah Deguara - 3rd - 2020
• Travis Kelce - 3rd - 2013
• Adrian Robinson - 4th - 2012
* Connor Barwin - 2nd - 2009
• Brent Celek - 5th - 2007

The Packers desperately needed targets for Aaron Rodgers and the fact Deguara can be of help is the main reason why this was the smartest pick. His success in college also provides some optimism now that the team is incredibly thin at tight end.
