The Yankees Somehow Got Screwed by the Red Sox Trading Mookie Betts to the Dodgers
By Jerry Trotta
Mookie Betts' inevitable breakup with the Boston Red Sox was made official on Tuesday night when news broke that the club agreed to a blockbuster deal to send the former AL MVP to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
In the fallout, New York Yankees devotees erupted with joy on social media, dancing on the graves of their bitter rival after Boston offloaded the man once thought to be its franchise cornerstone.
However, fans in the Bronx should hit the pause button on their celebration, because not everything about this trade is good for the Yanks.
It starts with the fact that David Price, a hurler that the Yanks thoroughly beat to a pulp every single time he takes the mound against them, particularly at Yankee Stadium, will no longer be in the division. The 34-year-old oft-injured southpaw is on his way to La La Land alongside Betts, keeping him out of harm's reach of the Yankees's sluggers.
Now, we'll transition to the bigger picture. Sure, the AL East, assuming Aaron Boone's side is able to fend of the Tampa Bay Rays, will probably be a cakewalk. However, should the Yankees achieve their goal of reaching the 2020 World Series, they'll likely be met by a Dodgers squad which already boasted the likes of Cody Bellinger, Corey Seager, Clayton Kershaw, Justin Turner, Walker Buehler, and Max Muncy. Adding Betts and Price to the mix in LA makes that a seriously dangerous team.
While it's no guarantee that either the Yankees or Dodgers make it to the Fall Classic, they'll be heralded as the favorites entering the year. Boston's latest bit of business just created another hurdle the Yanks will have overcome in order to claim World Series title No. 28.
We get that Yankees fans will pounce at any opportunity that's presented to eviscerate the Red Sox, but they shouldn't let their venom for Beantown blind them from the truth. As great as it is to see Betts out of the AL East, this trade could still come back to haunt the Yankees in October.
