Rumors emerged Wednesday suggesting Chicago Cubs general manager Theo Epstein was lined up for a reunion with the Boston Red Sox after the exec was spotted in Beantown over the weekend while his current club was being eliminated from playoff contention at Wrigley Field.

When you consider the Red Sox are still searching for a GM after firing Dave Dombrowski earlier in the month, the stars (briefly) appeared to be aligning for a homecoming.

However, Epstein swiftly squandered that chatter later in the day, inferring there's still plenty of work to be done in the Windy City and that he intends to remain in his current position with the Cubs.

Epstein's contract is set to expire after the 2020 campaign and he appears prepared to honor the final year of his agreement. Back in 2016, he signed a five-year deal worth $25 million.

To say that he's got his work cut out for him wouldn't even begin to describe Chicago's significantly underwhelming final two weeks of 2019.

A roster with as much talent as the Cubbies' should by no means miss out on postseason ball in the embarrassing fashion that they did after getting swept at home in a four-game set by the division-rival Cardinals, whose playoff positioning was already nearly set in stone.

Thanks for clearing the air, but its time to get to work, Mr. Epstein.
