There's Absolutely No Way the Mets Can Come Back From Blowing 6-Run Lead in 9th Against Nationals
By Scott Rogust
Well, how are you feeling, New York Mets fans, after the latest bone-crushing loss?
The Mets held a 10-4 lead over the Washington Nationals entering the bottom of the ninth inning on Tuesday night, but apparently that wasn't a big enough cushion for the bullpen. They surrendered seven runs, and the nail in the coffin came in the form of a walk-off three-run homer from Kurt Suzuki.
If Mets fans needed any further confirmation, this team has no shot in making the postseason after a gut-wrenching blow like that.
The Mets started off their 2019 season in usual fashion, with losses piling up and dysfunction at an all-time high. With many believing the team would sell at the trade deadline, general manager Brodie Van Wagenen did the exact opposite, and instead acquired Toronto Blue Jays ace Marcus Stroman.
After the deadline, the Mets were one of the hottest teams in baseball, and climbed all the way up the National League Wild Card standings. The fan base was excited, getting 2015 vibes from the squad, and looking primed to unleash a dominant starting rotation into October.
Those dreams were cratered nearly two weeks ago, as they were swept in consecutive series by NL powerhouses in the Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs. Even with a series win over the Philadelphia Phillies this past weekend, Tuesday night served as the final wake-up call for Mickey Callaway's squad.
The bullpen has been the main weakness for New York, and it was on full display in Washington. Paul Sewald surrendered two runs, and Callaway called upon Edwin Diaz, of all people, to close out the game. Diaz proceeded to surrender five runs (only two of which were charged to him), further adding to his miserable start to his tenure in New York.
With the Nationals and Cubs dominating at the moment, the Mets are losing ground to the Phillies, Arizona Diamondbacks and Milwaukee Brewers in the Wild Card standings.
It's time for the Mets to put the postseason dreams to rest after Tuesday night's loss. There's no way they can recover after blowing a game they should have won and needed to win.
