This Browns-Bucs OJ Howard Trade Could Beef up Cleveland's Two-TE Set
By Jerry Trotta
With the NFL Draft just seven days away, teams could look to shop certain players with the intent of making a major move from their current selection. One player to keep an eye on in that department is Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end OJ Howard, who is reportedly on the trading block.
Howard's fit (and future) in Tampa Bay grew increasingly hazy in 2019, during which he posted just 459 receiving yards and one touchdown in a robust passing offensive.
In terms of trade partners, the Cleveland Browns should look to bolster their offensive attack even further and inquire about Howard.
It seems inevitable that the Browns will part ways with David Njoku, so pairing Howard alongside free agent prize Austin Hooper, who the team made the highest-paid TE in the league, isn't as crazy as you might think. After all, Cleveland is clearly fixated on getting quarterback Baker Mayfield as many weapons as possible.
As palpable as Howard's potential is, his trade value has never been lower. Therefore, the Browns should be able get away with unloading one of their two third-round draft picks -- No. 74 and No. 97 overall -- as well as a sixth-rounder.
Cleveland would still be able to draft an elite offensive lineman with the No. 10 pick in the first round. Adding a player in Howard that oozes superstar qualities is just a bonus, and they should consider offloading Njoku to a needy NFC contender (hello, Green Bay!) for an additional mid-round pick.
The Bucs, meanwhile, would attain more draft capital, which they could use to strengthen their bottom-of-the-barrel secondary. Howard is as expendable as any player on Tampa's offense, so GM Jason Licht might as well cash in while he has the chance.
