This Chiefs-Colts Trade for Sammy Watkins Could Actually Work
By Thomas Carannante
The Kansas City Chiefs currently can't even afford a night out on the town with the $177 they have in cap space at the moment after re-signing wide receiver Mecole Hardman.
Obtaining more financial flexibility is a must for Kansas City, especially with the incoming draft class. At the moment, the Chiefs wouldn't be able to afford a seventh-round draft pick, and they still have to sign Patrick Mahomes to a contract extension!
You know what doesn't help? Having Sammy Watkins, albeit a talented and productive receiver, as the highest-paid player on your team. The 26-year-old has only played in all 16 games and recorded over 1,000 receiving yards ONCE in his six-year career. That's why he needs to be traded if he's unwilling to restructure his contract, because he's simply not worth a $21 million cap hit for 2020.
How about exploring a trade with the Indianapolis Colts, who have the cap space to absorb his salary? After all, they could use a few more weapons on offense for Philip Rivers. Perhaps the Chiefs can eat a few million in the deal to entice Indy, who can send them back a fourth- or fifth-rounder in return.
Kansas City is pretty much set on both sides of the ball for years to come, so at this point, the objective should be to add young talent around the core they have. As for the Colts, they're looking to elevate their offense in a short window with Rivers, and adding a guy like Watkins alongside TY Hilton will stretch the field.
This is the final year of Watkins' deal too, so if he has a successful stint or even promising start with the Colts, it could be a fit for him when the time comes to re-sign or talk about an extension.
A trade like this before the NFL Draft makes perfect sense for these two teams, whose needs are very clear.
