This Chiefs-Eagles Trade Involving Sammy Watkins Could Actually Work
By Jerry Trotta
There hasn't been much buzz indicating that the Kansas City Chiefs intend on trading wide receiver Sammy Watkins, but you have to think that general manager Brett Veach is champing at the bit to get the 26-year-old's contract off the books.
For the 2020 season, Watkins' deal -- three years, $48 million -- carries a monster $21 million hit against the cap. That will make it difficult to trade him, but there's no reason to believe that a potential buyer wouldn't immediately consider restructuring his contract upon adding the playmaker.
The Philadelphia Eagles are so desperate for wideout help that they might just be willing to to embrace navigating that headache.
Even if Philly wasn't able to reshuffle Watkins' contract, the franchise has the necessary cap room (over $28.5 million) to take on his cap hit. Now that that's settled, let's talk trade.
The Chiefs shouldn't be asking for much in return for Watkins, considering how motivated they are to unload his contract -- they have just $177 in cap space remaining for the incoming draft class, which is not a typo. That, and the former No. 4 overall pick is nowhere near consistent, in regards to his production.
Therefore, Kansas City wouldn't require more than a mid-to-late-round draft pick. The Eagles could start the bidding with their sixth-round selection. If that doesn't suffice, Philadelphia could cough up its fifth-rounder (No. 168 overall) and maybe an expiring contract to help weather Watkins' cap hit.
If not, a fifth- or fourth-rounder should be plenty enough to land a player in Watkins, who's recorded less than 1,200 receiving yards combined across the last two seasons in the Chiefs' high-powered offense.
