This Chiefs-Titans Trade for Sammy Watkins Could Actually Work
By Michael Luciano
The Kansas City Chiefs are actually over the NFL's salary cap, meaning a lot of noteworthy players from the 2019 championship team will have to be jettisoned in order to give the Chiefs some financial wiggle room, with the draft around the corner.
One player expected to be moved is wide receiver Sammy Watkins and his absurd $21 million cap hit.
Before a team like Philadelphia can pluck Watkins away from the Chiefs, the Tennessee Titans need to get on the horn with Brett Veach.
The Titans can go one of two directions in order to land Watkins. AJ Brown is untradeable, meaning that Corey Davis or Adam Humphries will need to go to Kansas City in return. While Tennessee hasn't picked up Davis' fifth-year option, which could help the Chiefs clear cap space in 2021 as they prepare for Patrick Mahomes' impending mega contract, he has a very high ceiling and could be on the verge of a breakout season.
While Humphries is less talented, yet more experienced, he is under contract until 2022 by virtue of a four-year, $36 million deal he signed in the 2019 offseason.
Given how the Chiefs could use Davis' size and speed more than Humphries' sure hands and separation, and how Davis could be dropped after the 2020 season as the Chiefs get ready to sign Mahomes, Davis is the more likely option to be moved to Kansas City. Throw in a mid-round pick going from Tennessee to Kansas City, and Watkins could be on his way to Nashville.
Watkins' tremendous performances in the playoffs helped rehabilitate his reputation, taking him from overpriced free agency bust to solid No. 2 wideout on a championship team. Tennessee, in need of more targets for Ryan Tannehill, could have one of the best 1-2 punches in the league between Brown and Watkins.
