This Patriots-Panthers Trade Involving Cam Newton Makes Sense
By Jack Murphy
After Tom Brady decided to leave his long-time home of Foxborough for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the New England Patriots are in desperate need of an adequate replacement. As the roster currently stands, Jarrett Stidham would be the starter, and that would not cut it in today's NFL (unless Bill Belichick's master plan involves Trevor Lawrence). As they are highly unlikely to use a first-round pick on his replacement this time around, the Pats will most likely find their next signal caller via either free agency or trade.
The Carolina Panthers are currently looking at trading their former MVP Cam Newton, and New England might be great new home for the 30-year-old quarterback, who doesn't have a lot of options left. The Patriots may be able to land Brady's replacement by sending Carolina second- and fifth-round picks, based on what other, expensive QBs have been departing in exchange for.
With the combination of Newton's injury history and Belichick's witchcraft in trade negotiations, the Patriots should be able to acquire Newton without having to sacrifice a future first-round pick.
These picks should be sufficient for a team that is seemingly turning to a rebuild process. The team's thorny negotiations with Newton and Greg Olsen, paired with their best defensive player in Luke Kuechly retiring, make Carolina is a whole different football team. It is time for them to rebuild their team under Matt Rhule as best they can through the draft.
This proposed trade would give both teams exactly what they are in need of. New England gets an experienced, quality quarterback to run their offense in exchange for picks the Panthers can use to help refill the void former players left.
