This Undrafted Free Agent is Guaranteed to Make the Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers are going to have a tough 2020 season. The Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Ravens, and Cincinnati Bengals all got better this offseason, while the Steelers couldn't make too much headway considering their lack of cap space. Either way, they made up for it in the NFL Draft, and with their undrafted rookie signings.

Choosing an undrafted free agent with the best chance to make the team is tough, because the Steelers roster is absolutely stacked. But, if there's one player that can be guaranteed to make the regular season roster, it's cornerback James Pierre.

Pittsburgh's biggest strength is their defense. They're stacked at the line of scrimmage, while their linebacking corps is one of the best in the league. But their major weakness comes at the cornerback position.

Yes, the Steelers have Joe Haden and Steven Nelson as their starters, but the depth on the team leaves a lot to be desired. Justin Layne will hopefully grow into a top cornerback in Pittsburgh, but he's not right now. Mike Hilton is an above average nickelback. But other than that, there's not much to like on the depth chart. That means Pierre has a feasible chance to make the squad.

Pierre possesses prototypical size and length to play the corner position in the NFL. More importantly, he's a playmaker. The thing is, his game could still use some refinement. Even so, he has the chance to be a quality depth option on the Steelers. During his junior season with the Owls, Pierre recorded 44 tackles, seven pass deflections, and three interceptions.

Considering the positional weakness, Pierre has a good shot of making the team if he has a strong training camp and preseason. Don't be surprised to see that he made the final cut for the 53-man roster.
