This Undrafted Free Agent is Guaranteed to Make the Broncos
By Michael Luciano
The Denver Broncos spent most of the earlier parts of the 2020 NFL Draft getting Drew Lock some new weapons, as evidenced by the selections of Jerry Jeudy in the first round, KJ Hamler in the second, and Albert Okwuegbunam in the fourth.
Additionally, their UDFA haul stands out when compared to some of their rivals. While Texas Tech safety Douglas Coleman III and Western Michigan running back LeVante Bellamy all stand out as sneaky candidates to make the 53-man roster, the best player Denver roped in during this initial UDFA wave was Wake Forest cornerback Essang Bassey, a feisty slot guy with good ball skills.
Bassey's main hurdles when it comes to sticking on pro roster are his size and Senior Bowl tape. He was dismal in Mobile and stands 5-9 and 190 pounds with small 7-7/8-inch hands.
His tape, however, shows a guy who is built like a brick house despite his size. He adept at jamming receivers at the line, fighting for the ball in midair, and breaking on routes, the latter of which shows off a high football IQ.
Throw some solid run defending ability and a 4.46 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine to his name, and you have a perfect dime cornerback and special teamer.
The UDFA market is always full of guys who might be an inch too short and a step too slow, but Bassey's tenacity at the line of scrimmage and plus ball skills should help him assimilate nicely into Vic Fangio's defense.
