This Undrafted Free Agent is Guaranteed to Make the Colts
By Michael Luciano
Drafting specialists is always a risky proposition, but many expected the Indianapolis Colts to use a pick in the 2020 NFL Draft on a kicker after Adam Vinatieri started to lose his sharpness at the age of 47.
Instead, they lasted all seven rounds without opting for a specialist, then managed to add one of the best kickers in the 2020 draft as an undrafted free agent, as they signed former Georgia star Rodrigo Blankenship, easily the cream of their free agency crop.
Blankenship kicked for four seasons, nailing over 78% of his kicks in all four of his seasons. The 2019 Lou Groza Award winner, Blankenship has a strong enough leg to consistently nail 50-yard kicks while remaining accurate enough to make kicks in even the most pressure-packed situations.
The No. 2 scorer in SEC history, Blankenship should have an easy transition to the NFL, as he will be going from muggy, humid SEC afternoons to a controlled dome environment in Indianapolis. Colts fans won't be disappointed with Blankenhip's right leg.
Vinatieri was as clutch as they came for the last 13 years, but the Colts need to move forward with some young blood. Blankenship has nailed clutch kicks for the last four years in the SEC, and he has the leg talent to be a solid presence at Lucas Oil Stadium for the next decade.
