VIDEO: Never Forget Kris Bryant Infuriating Thom Brennaman Beyond Belief With Go-Ahead Blast Against the Reds
By Scott Rogust
If you want to be a national sports commentator, you have to leave your fandom at the door and present yourself in an unbiased manner. But sometimes, even the best broadcasters can be tested. Just ask FOX Sports' Thom Brennaman. While calling a Cincinnati Reds-Chicago Cubs game last July, Brennaman's beloved Reds had a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh inning. But with two men on base, Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant mashed a three-run homer off pitcher Michael Lorenzen to take the lead, and you can actually hear Brennaman throw his pen in the broadcast booth.
What's truly "unbelievable" is that you can hear Brennaman throw his pen not once, but twice! This gives Gary Thorne's hatred for New York Yankees infielder Gleyber Torres a run for its money.
The Reds hold a special place in Brennaman's heart. He's done Reds games on TV for years, and his father, Marty, was the Reds' radio broadcaster from 1974 all the way up until he announced his retirement in 2019. You can understand why Thom wants to see the team succeed.
But he could do a better job of hiding it.
Let that be a lesson to you aspiring sports commentators: never throw anything while that mic is on. That's J-school 101!
