Tim Tebow Invited Back to Mets Spring Training
By Jerry Trotta
You probably thought it was over, right?
That's OK. We did too.
Despite a forgettable 2019 campaign that ended prematurely due to injury, the New York Mets confirmed their Spring Training invitation to Tim Tebow on Thursday.
This has to be a PR stunt, right? That, or a promotion for ticket sales. There's simply no other logical explanation for the Metsies to keep the faith in the former Heisman Trophy winner.
Across 77 games (239 at-bats) with Triple-A Syracuse this past season, Tebow hit a paltry 1.63 alongside a .240 OBP and whopping 98 strikeouts.
Today's invitation means that the 32-year-old will begin his fourth full season in the Amazins' organization, during which he's mustered a .223/.299/.338 slash line, 18 home runs and 327 strikeouts in 287 games. Both of his 2018 and 2019 campaigns were cut short via a hand injury.
New York has received their fair share of flack for giving Tebow playing time over players that could potentially breakthrough their MLB roster one day. That debate is sure to resurface following this news.
It was a nice story at first, but Tebow's dream of being called up to the big time is preposterous at this rate.
