Former Eagles DT Timmy Jernigan Claims He Won't Be Joining Texans Despite Reaching Agreement
By Michael Luciano
The offseason from hell for Houston Texans overlord Bill O'Brien has yet to cease. Now, one of his under-the-radar signings on defense has walked away from his deal.
Former Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan agreed to a one-year contract with the Texans, but now claims he will not be playing in Houston.
Jernigan was medically cleared for action by an independent doctor, and it sounds like he thinks he could earn more money than the $3.75 million he would have made with the Texans.
Jernigan, a 2014 draftee and former Florida State star, started for three seasons on the Baltimore Ravens, but the second-rounder was traded to the Eagles along with the pick that became Rasul Douglas in exchange for the 2017 third-round selection that turned into Chris Wormley. Unfortunately, Jernigan has not been as productive as he was in Baltimore.
His health has started to fail him in recent years, as he's played just 13 games over the last two seasons. A stacked Eagles defensive line taking snaps away from him didn't help either.
Houston will need to lean on second-round rookie Ross Blacklock even more in 2020 now that Jernigan will be looking to play elsewhere.
