This Starter Won't Be Back With the Titans in 2021

After a surprising playoff run in 2019, expectations are high for the Titans in 2020. Derrick Henry had an incredible campaign and they rode him all the way to the AFC Championship, taking out the Ravens and Patriots on the way. Henry is going to need an extension after signing a franchise tender this season, and they will have to make space for him by letting other players go. In this case, Corey Davis is likely out the door.

After being drafted fifth overall in 2017, Davis was supposed to be the next Julio Jones or A.J. Green. So far in his career, things haven't turned out that way. In three seasons, Davis has a total of 1,867 yards and six touchdowns. For a fifth overall selection, it's just not good enough, especially with the great wide receiver talent taken later on in the same draft.

For this reason, the Titans declined his fifth-year option this offseason.

Another factor in the decision to move on from Davis is the emergence of A.J. Brown in 2019. In his rookie season, Brown totaled 1,051 yards and had eight touchdowns. He led the team in all major receiving categories, making Davis the clear No. 2 receiver heading into 2020.

With Ryan Tannehill under center and Henry in the backfield, the Titans will most definitely be a run-first team moving forward. This means there will be less of a need for Davis in the future, especially if A.J. Brown can make the same impact his sophomore season.

At this point, Davis is easily replaceable, even as a starter, given his marginal production since entering the NFL, and you can bet the Titans will look for someone to replace him in 2021.
