3 Titans Veterans Fighting for Their Jobs After the NFL Draft
By Michael Luciano
The Tennessee Titans surprised a lot of folks when they knocked off Tom Brady and Lamar Jackson in back-to-back weeks to make it to the AFC Championship, and they continued to impress in the 2020 NFL Draft. They managed to land some studs like Georgia's Isaiah Wilson in the first round and LSU's Kristian Fulton in the second despite a limited amount of picks.
Jon Robinson and Mike Vrabel's smooth navigation of the draft should put these three veterans, who could lose their jobs or playing time, on edge.
3. DT DaQuan Jones
Jones figured to be up for an increased role after Jurrell Casey was dealt to the Denver Broncos, but the signing of Jack Crawford, the increased role Jeffery Simmons will be handed, and the selection of North Carolina State lineman Larrell Murchison in the fifth round means that Vrabel won't count on Jones alone to replace Casey's production. If Simmons plays up to his sky-high potential, Jones will become redundant and could be cut.
2. OT Dennis Kelly
Kelly might have a new three-year contract, but the selection of Wilson, a right tackle in college that isn't going to supplant Taylor Lewan in the left side, has effectively strapped a ticking time bomb to Kelly's chest. At the first whiff of poor play on the field, the fan base and organization will be pining for Wilson to start getting snaps, which could ultimately force the Titans to find a trade partner for Kelly.
1. CB Malcolm Butler
Butler is the owner of one of the worst contracts ever given out to a defensive player in NFL free agency in history. In the middle of a five-year deal, Butler has been one of the most targeted corners in the league while Adoree' Jackson has stolen the No. 1 spot from him. If the Titans cut Butler after the 2020 season, which is entirely possible if Fulton plays up to his potential, they will only take on $4 million in dead cap. Butler should expect 2020 to be his final year in Tennessee.
