More Details Emerge Regarding Tony Romo's Monster Broadcasting Contract With CBS
By Jerry Trotta
On Friday, it was reported that Tony Romo inked a long-term contract extension with CBS that will see him become the highest-paid NFL analyst in league history. Per the New York Post, the extension is expected to be worth approximately $17 million per season.
Bizarrely enough, Romo's good fortune might JUST be getting started.
ESPN insider Adam Schefter reported on Saturday morning that the 39-year-old's contract could evolve into a 10-year deal before long. However, that's contingent upon the NFL extending its rights deal with CBS. Should that happen, Romo's deal would include seven more years, even if the new hypothetical rights deal expires in less than seven years.
In other words, the contract would easily eclipse the $100 million (!) mark over time. That's utterly insane, but we can't argue with it as CBS likely considered this variable before offering Romo his new groundbreaking extension.
To put these mind-rattling figures into perspective, Romo only earned more than $17 million in just THREE of his 13 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. We'll go out on the most fragile of limbs and say that the former four-time Pro Bowler made the right call in transitioning to a career in broadcasting.
