Final Reported Details on Tony Romo's Contract With CBS Are Jaw-Dropping
By Will Coleman
If you needed proof that the NFL is so powerful it practially owns a day of the week, look no further than Tony Romo's latest contract with CBS.
The Dallas Cowboys quarterback-turned-color commentator agreed to a new contract with CBS last week that will pay him more annually than all but the highest earners in the NFL. Relative to the cost it takes for CBS to maintain its media rights to televise football games, Romo's $17 million annual salary is pocket change – but the final details of Romo's contract that just emerged are simply astounding.
Over the next 10 years working NFL broadcasts for CBS, Romo will make more money than Jerry Jones' initial investment in purchasing the Cowboys, now one of the world's most valuable sports franchises. ESPN, among other competing networks, had an offer prepared for Romo at the end of his three-year contract, but his deal with CBS makes him the highest-paid NFL analyst in television history.
There's no correlation between Romo's salary and the contracts of the NFL's biggest stars because football and TV are entirely separate industries, but it's truly remarkable to see how much more he'll be making compared to the league's top playmakers.
Romo's experience on the field enables him to see and call out plays before they happen from the booth, something which has led to him becoming one of the most beloved commentators in the game. At just 39 years old, it's safe to say Romo has a bright future in broadcasting.
