When Warriors forward Kevin Durant went down during Game 5 of the NBA Finals with an Achilles injury, it sounded like a surge of Toronto fans were cheering and waving goodbye as the former NBA MVP first went down, before later serenading him as he limped off the court.

However, Toronto Mayor John Tory believes that reports of these cheers are "overstated," and that the media is just depicting the city's sports fans in a negative light:

"I was in the arena and it happened right at the end of a play and people were cheering at the end of the play but very quickly after that (Durant) got a very warm round of applause as he was taken on to the dressing room — as he should, he's a superstar, and nobody wants to see him hurt."

He would continue to say that, "Toronto sports fans are good fans, they're considerate fans and they understand a superstar when they see one and I think that's the kind of applause he got as he left the arena."

What were the waves, then?

Durant knew he wasn't ready to come back, yet he tried anyway knowing that he team needed him, and that should be respected no matter how much you may hate him. Several NBA players stepped in on KD's behalf, too, in an effort to fight back against the Canuck fans.

Even Joel Embiid, who just played there himself, chimed in.

There is no place in the NBA for this. An injury should never be celebrated, no matter what team a player plays for or how big his role is within that organization. Hopefully, the mayor understands that, too.
