VIDEO: Tristan Thompson Calling Plays for Cavaliers in Late-Game Situations Proves John Beilein Was the Wrong Hire
With all the tales of terror that have come out of the Cavaliers locker room in recent weeks, it's safe to say that head coach John Beilein has not endeared himself to Cavs fans very well in his brief, yet tumultuous, tenure with the organization. From the team's deteriorating relationship with star PF Kevin Love, to accusations of misconduct regarding Beilein's interactions with the players, this has been the season from hell for Cleveland fans (and we aren't even gonna mention their football team this time). While Beilein's biggest issues have come from an interpersonal level, his coaching abilities may soon be called into question, as evidenced by Thursday night's game with the Detroit Pistons, when the final play of the game was drawn up by Tristan Thompson, rather than Beilein or any of his assistants.
It's hard to imagine a worse sight for a fan than seeing your team's extremely limited big man calling the shots in the huddle, as your squad holds onto a tenuous lead in an overtime contest. While the Cavs were able to hang on for a victory in this one, Thompson's override of Beilein's coaching is an indictment of the former Michigan coach's grasp on the locker room. Following the incident that saw Beilein slip up and call his own players "a bunch of thugs" (or slugs, depending on who you believe?) it would appear as though this hiring was a huge mistake, and it's eternally unclear why Beilein left the job he had for this minute shot at professional program-building.
Beilein still has four and a half more years on his deal with the Cavaliers, but with the internal turmoil surrounding the team already, it's clear that a change is needed sooner rather than later.
