Troy Aikman Thinks He Knows How Cowboys-Dak Prescott Contract Extension Standoff Will End
By Alexander Wolz
Dak Prescott reportedly turned down a five-year, $175 million extension deal with the Dallas Cowboys -- a story that shocked just about every football fan on earth -- only for us all to learn that the report wasn't 100% accurate. All the same, the quarterback is still without a new contract, which is a real source of anxiety among the faithful in Big D.
Luckily for the Boys, franchise legend Troy Aikman is confident that there's a happy ending here. he told insider Mike Fisher of Sports Illustrated that he believes Dak is ultimately going to come to terms with the team on a long-term deal.
So, case closed?
Speaking on 105.3 The Fan sports radio, Aikman voiced his admiration for Prescott and certainty of his future with the franchise. "I love Dak Prescott," he said. "They will pay him, he’s going to make a lot of money, and I think he’s going to be the quarterback for the Cowboys for a long long time, and continue to have a great career."
That is certainly high praise from a Dallas great who knows a thing or two about what it means to hack it in the Metroplex.
As a fan of Prescott, Aikman is right to reiterate his support for the man who has been an impact player for the Cowboys. Prescott's career has been a success thus far, especially considering he was merely the No. 135 overall pick. However, the question of value is one to consider, and despite Aikman's praise, Prescott's understood desire for something around record-setting money still seems a bit out of reach for the Cowboys, as his talent is not that of a top-five quarterback in the NFL.
While Prescott is a franchise quarterback, paying him as much as he desires may end up hurting the Cowboys in the end. And with an unspectacular but capable quarterback in Andy Dalton brought in as a reinforcement, Dallas may be able to find success even without Dak.
Regardless, it is interesting to hear both Aikman's support of Prescott and, even more so, his confidence in Dallas offering up the right amount of money to keep him in the fold and send everyone home happy. Aikman and others seem to know something the rest of us don't though, because at the current moment, Dak's interests still feel unrealistic.
