Twins Acquire Closer Sergio Romo From Marlins
By Sam Dunn
The Minnesota Twins are powerful. They are formidable. You should not want your team to play them. And as the 2019 MLB season races toward the trade deadline, they're making themselvs even stronger.
Per ESPN's Jeff Passan, the AL Central leaders are locking in a trade with the Miami Marlins for relief pitcher Sergio Romo.
Romo, an All-Star in 2013 as a member of the Giants, has 17 saves in 38 total appearances for the Fish this year-- that's two more saves than Twins back-end man Taylor Rogers. He's not as much of a strikeout artist this season as he's been in the past, but his tidy 3.58 ERA across 37.2 innings in 2019 will fit in just fine on a Minnesota team that stands to give him a heck of a lot more support than he was getting down in south Florida.
As Jon Heyman reports, corner infield prospect Lewin Diaz will head to Miami to consummate the swap. Additionally, righty Chris Vallimont will follow Romo to Minneapolis.
At age 36, Romo is on the back stretch of his career. But he's still a three-time World Series champ who gives Rocco Baldelli one more option in middle or late relief, and come playoff time, he'll have every chance to show his value.
